Top tips to improve your credit report
Applying for a new mobile phone contract, credit card or even mortgage, there is no getting away from it your credit file plays a major part in weather or not your are accepted.
Our top tips could help your improve your score be it good bad or ugly and greatly increase your chances of being accepted for your new contract.
1). Get a copy of your credit file
All lenders will look at your credit report even if it is just to check your identity. Check your details carefully to ensure they are correct, simple errors such as incorrect name or address even miss spellings can effect your chances of being accepted. To check your credit file you can use these online services Equifax or Experian (Credit Expert). You can also apply for your statutory report usually available for just £2 and a stamp. Apply for your statutory Experian credit report here or your Equifax one here.
2). Get on the electoral roll
Register to vote at your current address, lenders use the electoral roll as a form of identity check – this is proof you live where you say you do. While some networks will ask for alternate proof of address others could simply reject your application.
3). Consistent on time payments
Paying your bills on time and in full is of course a great way to improve your credit report – when this isn’t possible the worst thing you can do is burry your head in the sand. If you face difficulties with your bills you should sit down and work out an affordable payment plan (you must ensure you can stick to it) contact your creditors and explain your situation – you will be surprised how helpful they can be. Alternatively contact a debt advise service they can help you with payment plans and income and expenditure sheets – here are some listed on the government website: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/ManagingDebt/PlanYourWayOutOfDebt/DG_187500
4). Get rid of any unused credit accounts
Lenders will not only look at how many credit accounts you already have and how much you owe but they will take into account how much you could borrow. Unused accounts will detract from this figure so closing them down will free up your credit.
5). Consolidation of outstanding debts
If you are able why not take a little time to identify which of your current credit accounts are costing you the most and see if consolidating them into one can save you money and reduce the number of active credit accounts you have and so help improve your credit score.
6). Hold your horses
Every time you apply for credit a lender will look at your credit report and a footprint is made. Think of it like a dirty great builder stomping all over your new cream carpet in muddy size 12 rigger boots! There is only so many builders your carpet can take. So keep the number of searches down by only applying for 3 credit accounts in any 6 month period.
7). Build up some good credit history
As stupid as it is more often than not people get turned down for credit simply because they haven’t had any or have had very little in the way of credit accounts before. Lenders like to see evidence to show you’re a responsible borrower, usually the only way around this is to apply for products designed for people with a less than perfect credit history.
8). Be careful of credit repair companies
Companies who claim they can remove / change data on your credit files often charge high fees and more often than not can’t deliver.
9). Check your report regularly
Always make sure the information on your report is accurate, if you spot any errors you will be able to inform the relevant lender straight away - for example if you were unwell and couldn’t make your payments on time as a result, you can add something called a Notice of Correction to your account. Potential lenders will be able to see this explanation – again, be prepared to provide proof.
10). Look out there’s identity fraud about!
As above checking your file often is the key, look for incorrect, unusual or suspicious entries – such as new accounts you didn’t apply contact the police, lender and credit reference agencies as soon as you spot anything suspicious.
