Vodafone buys Spanish Cable Operator Ono

Vodafone reached an agreement last Monday to buy the Spanish cable operator Ono for £6billion. Ono is Spain’s second largest provider of broadband internet, pay television and fixed telephone services with 1.9 million customers in 13 of Spain’s 17 regions. The transaction is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year subject to regulatory approval.

The deal is the latest acquisition by Vodafone in the European Market and will allow Vodafone to offer mobile and fixed-line communications, pay-tv and broadband in Spain complemented by agreements with Orange to build fibre networks in Spain. It has already purchased Kabel Deutschland Holding AG last year giving the company a foothold in TV and broadband in Germany and is building fibre broadband networks in Portugal and Italy.

Vittoria Colao, Vodafone’s chief executive said: “Demand for unified communications products and services has increased significantly over the last few years in Spain, and this transaction, together with our fibre-to-the-home build programme, will accelerate our ability to offer best-in-class propositions in the Spanish market.”
